The bonfire is a strangely attractive sight. Small embers are picked up by the wind, zipping up into an inky sky like fireflies. Humans sit around it in a loose circle, either on the ground or on rotted logs. Some are guzzling soft drinks from vividly colored cans. Others are eating marshmallows and hotdogs roasted over the fire. Around their feet lounge dogs. Some are content with just lying there at the feet of their masters, head on their paws. Others are going from person to person, begging for scraps using their cutest expressions. A few show a mixing of blood from other species. Others are crouched in the darkness surrounding this flame, called by the light but repulsed by the humans who guard it. Their eyes gleam in the night like the stars overhead. All that is on their minds are plans to steal the food, to chase away or recruit the mutts.
